52nd International Film Festival of India to be held from 20th-28th November in Goa

PIB Delhi: The poster for the 52nd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI)’ was released today. The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javadekar released the poster along with the set of rules to be followed. The festival will be held in Goa from 20th -28th November 2021.

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is reckoned as one of Asia’s oldest and India’s biggest international film festivals. The 52nd edition of IFFI will be held in a hybrid format considering the success of the 51st edition. The Festival is being organized by the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India in collaboration with the State Government of Goa and the Indian Film Industry.

What is the International Film Festival of India?

  • IFFI is recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).
  • Every year, the festival celebrates some of the finest cinematic works and showcases a bouquet of the best films from India and around the world.
  • The Films Division of the GOI had organised the first edition of IFFI, under the patronage of India’s first Prime Minister.
  • The Festival was first held in Mumbai from January 24 to February 1, 1952.
  • IT was later moved to Madras, Delhi, Calcutta, and Trivandrum.
  • It had about 40 features and 100 short films in total.

The first edition was non-competitive and had 23 countries including the US participating with 40 feature films and about 100 short films. The Indian entries for the festival were Awara (Hindi), Patala Bhairavi (Telugu), Amar Bhoopali (Marathi), and Babla (Bengali). This was the first International Film Festival held anywhere in Asia. The notable films shown during the festival were Bicycle Thieves, Miracle in Milan, Rome, Open City from Italy. Yukiwarisoo (Japan), The Dancing Fleese (UK), The River (USA), and The Fall of Berlin (USSR).

The call for entries for participation in the competitive section of the 52nd edition of the IFFI will remain open till Aug 31, 2021. On the occasion of the birth centenary of the maestro of Indian cinema Satyajit Ray, this time the Directorate of Films Festivals, Ministry of I&B, will pay a tribute through a Special Retrospective at the IFFI. Also, in recognition of the auteur’s legacy, the “Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Cinema” has been instituted from this year to be given at the IFFI every year starting from this year.
