Two days after the central government announcement to accelerate World’s Largest vaccination drive, the Serum Institute of India (SII), has scaled up the production of vaccine. Along with this, the SII has now fixed the prices of the Covidsheild vaccine at ₹600 per dose for private hospitals and ₹400 per dose for state governments, Serum Institute of India chief executive Adar Poonawalla said in a statement.
Adding further he said that, “The promising directives will help to scale up vaccine production and allow state governments, private hospitals, and vaccination centres to procure vaccines directly.” For the next two months, the company will address the limited capacity by scaling up the vaccine production. Going ahead, 50% of our capacities will be served to the Government of India’s vaccination program, and the remaining 50% of the capacity will be for the State governments and private hospitals.

Looking at the complexity, and urgency of the situation, the company further urged corporate and private individuals to access the vaccines through the state facilitated machinery and private health systems as it would be challenging to supply them independently to each corporate entity. Post 4-5 months, the vaccines will be made available in retail and free trade.

Currently, the Indian vaccine supplied by the Serum Institute of India (SII) is affordable in comparison to any other vaccines in the world. As of now, both Serum and Bharat Biotech are supplying vaccines at a cost of Rs 150 and Rs 206, respectively (excluding taxes).
In a meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi earlier this week, an important decision of allowing vaccination to everyone above the age of 18 from 1st May was been taken. PM said that the Government has been working hard for over a year to ensure that maximum numbers of Indians are able to get the vaccine in the shortest possible time. He added that India is vaccinating people at a world record pace& we will continue this with even greater momentum.
