IAF becomes the helping hand for cyclone ‘TAUKTAE’

The deep depression over the Arabian Sea has intensified into cyclonic storm Tauktae and is predicted to intensify further into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ by Monday, with windspeed ranging between 150kmph and 160kmph the India Meteorological Department said in its release. It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar & Naliya around 18th May afternoon/evening.

IAF on alert

The Indian Air Force has kept 16 transport aircraft and 18 helicopters on op readiness in peninsular India in preparation for the Cyclone Tauktae. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall along the western coast of India is expected in the next few days.

127 personnel and 11 tonnes of cargo from Bhatinda to Jamnagar have been airlifted on IL-76 aircraft. Whereas 25 personnel and 12.3 tonnes of cargo from Bhatinda to Rajkot have been airlifted in A C-130 aircraft. In addition to this, two C-130 aircraft have airlifted 126 personnel and 14 tonnes of cargo from Bhubaneswar to Jamnagar. Additionally, IAF Covid relief operations have been focused in these coastal areas for the coming few days, as bad weather is likely to affect air operations later. The cyclone relief operations are in addition to those underways for Covid relief.

Rainfall Conditions

Light to moderate rainfall at many places very likely to commence over coastal districts of Saurashtra from 16th May afternoon, at many places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over Saurashtra & Kutch and Diu and extremely heavy falls at isolated places in Junagarh & Gir Somnath Districts on 17th and with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places over Saurashtra & Kutch and Diu with extremely heavy falls (≥ 20 cm) at isolated places of Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar & Kutch districts on 18th May is expected.

Fishing Operations on Hold

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep –Maldives areas, the east-central Arabian Sea along & off Karnataka coast, east-central the Arabian Sea and along & off Maharashtra – Goa coasts and into eastcentral& adjoining northeast the Arabian Sea along & off Gujarat coast till 18th May. Those who are out at Sea over the North Arabian Sea are advised to return to the coast.

Till now 53 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed along with 24 teams pre-deployment, 29 teams standby-ready for 5 states Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra, tweeted Director-General of NDRF Satya Pradhan. Additions are being made as per the requirements.

According to the government sources, PM Narendra Modi is expected to hold an important meeting later in the day to review preparations to deal with the impending Cyclone Tauktae.
